The Rare, The Unusual, The Hard-to-Find?

Let us help!

Twenty plus years in the bird business has brought us a good working relationship  with some of the finest breeders in the world, breeders who produce many of the rare species of parrots that we don't personally breed.

Let us use these contacts to help you locate that special bird.

Whether you are looking for a pet-quality companion bird or future or current breeding stock, we welcome the opportunity to find a quality bird or birds for you!  We deal only with reputable and established breeders who are both knowledgeable and experienced with these rare parrots.  With the exception of the Hawkhead parrots, we do not raise any of these birds here, but we do represent them for several breeders who prefer to have our assistance in placing their stock.

My associate on the Mainland personally knows many of these breeders and has worked with them for almost a decade.  Birds are shipped from the breeder/owner directly to you once they have been weaned onto a nutritionally balanced diet and checked by an avian veterinarian.  A deposit holds your chick during the time it is being weaned for you.   All birds must be paid in full including crate and shipping costs (in most cases) before the bird(s) is shipped to you.

To keep you involved as your chick grows, we'll email you information on your bird's progress as well as amusing antics, favorite foods and toys.

All babies are sold weaned only and it is inadvisable to purchase an unweaned bird of any species without proper handfeeding training.  The correct feeding and weaning of any bird is essential to its future health and well-being and should not be attempted by those without extensive experience.

Although we primarily handle domestic (US) sales, export sales are also possible at an increased cost due to the extensive permitting paperwork and extra time involved.   Not all birds are allowed by the USFWS to be exported so please let us know what country you wish to export to when you send any inquiry.

Prices vary with sex and subspecies for these most desirable birds.  We currently have access to both Aterrimus and Goliath Palm Cockatoos, although the Goliaths are much harder to find.

A male Aterrimus runs from $10,000 to $12,000 while females range from $12,000 to $15,000.  Goliaths sell from approximately $17,000 to $22,000.  Prices vary from breeder to breeder.

These birds are in great demand and often have a deposit placed on them within hours of hatching; sometimes in advance of that, as it is not that uncommon to reserve the egg, pre-hatch.  Often there is no time to contact a prospective buyer when a chick is found before we must place a deposit.  So, if a Palm cockatoo is your dream, be prepared to give us $1000 to $1500 when you place your order so we move quickly when a chick hatches.  With Palms, nature produces less females and they are always in greater demand.  Black Palm Cockatoos can take up to a year to wean properly, with an average weaning time of about six months, so be prepared for a wait to receive your bird and be patient.

HYACINTH MACAW

There is nothing to say about a Hyacinth Macaw that hasn't already been written.  They are the largest of the macaws, with a massive beak, yet they are gentle giants and usually very playful and affectionate.

Of these rarer species, the Hyacinth Macaw is the easiest to find and we usually have both babies as well as older birds and breeding pairs.  Proven breeding pairs sell for $20,000 to $25,000, bonded pairs for somewhat less.  Just weaned babies are approximately $9000.  Again, prices do vary a little from breeder to breeder.  Hyacinth babies can easily take close to a year to wean properly.

HAWKHEAD PARROT

Hawkhead Parrots make excellent pets, but may not be the bird for the inexperienced or first-time bird owner.   They are affectionate and clown-like in their behavior and mannerisms.  They are smart and easy to train, and they learn to talk and do tricks very easily.

Most Hawkheads even enjoy learning to lie on their backs in your hand to let you tickle their bellies.  They can be taught to dance on your shoulder (very cute!) and most anything that larger parrots can do.  Almost all of our Hawkhead Parrots talk by the time they are weaned.

A Hawkhead habit that has scared many people and earned these birds the reputation of being aggressive, is their fondness of hanging upside down and striking at you.  If you keep your hand steady the beak will strike towards it with lightning speed but, amazingly, when it reaches you it will be but a gentle tap.  This mostly happens as a game when hanging upside down -- but can occur in other positions also. Of course, like any other living being, if a Hawkhead feels threatened he will strike for real.  Baby Hawkheads sell from $1500 to $1800.

BLUE YELLOW-NAPED & OTHER AMAZON MUTATIONS

We are pleased to announce a new mutation of the Blue-Fronted Amazon (Amazona aestiva).  It's the first Amazon mutation of its kind to be hatched in captivity.  We are currently accepting offers on this stunning bird.  It was hatched in May 2004.

The Blue Mutation Yellow-Naped Amazon (Amazona ochrocephala auropalliata) is one of the world's most sought after acquisitions for those that appreciate Amazons.  These Blue Amazons are not only more intelligent than most of their green relatives, their gorgeous blue coloration and large size gives them an impressive presence that cannot be captured in a photo.

This mutation developed in the wild and four birds, three males and one female, were imported over many years.   Two of the  long-term captive males  proved difficult to pair with normally colored hens.  The other two were acquired by Howard Voren in Honduras, and were the only male and female pair in the world.  After many years of anticipation, the blue mutation Amazon pair began to produce.  Voren was not only the first in the world to produce the blue mutation Amazons; his project was successful enough to place pairs of these fabulous birds in other top world breeding facilities.  At this time they are still considered extremely rare with only about 25-30 specimens worldwide.   Single babies cost around $18,000 to $20,000 each when available.

GANG-GANG COCKATOO

Pictured is a male Gang-Gang Cockatoo, and as a dimorphic species, the hens are colored differently with gray heads.  The wispy crest is the same for both sexes.  Price again vary with sex of the bird and from breeder to breeder.  Males are generally a little less expensive.  Prices range from $12,000 to $15,000.  They are produced by very few breeders.  Consequently, this is also a situation where demand far exceeds supply.

Like the Palm Cockatoos, baby Gang-Gangs often have a deposit placed on them within hours of hatching and sometimes in advance of the hatch.  As with the Palms, it is essential to send a deposit when you place your order as we often have to be able to act on your behalf to reserve a baby very quickly.  $1000 to $1500 is fairly standard.  There is a higher demand for females currently.  Gang-Gang Cockatoos can take up to a year to wean properly.

RED-TAILED & OTHER BLACK COCKATOO

Unfortunately, not many pairs of these rare birds exist in American aviculture, although there are chicks available from time to time.  The future of the Yellow-Tail Black and White-Tail Black Cockatoos, "cousins" to the Red-Tail Black, is equally dim in American aviculture.

Bonded or proven pairs of Red-Tail Blacks occasionally come on the market priced somewhere between $25,000 and $40,000.   Single males are around $15,000 to $18,000 with females commanding a lower price.
