Meet Goldie and Jason, the latest pair to be added to our collection.   They are Greater Jardine Parrots native to Africa.  However, these two were born in Wisconsin!  This is one species we have alway intended to try to breed, but until now, we haven't had the opportunity.  Many mahalos to Don L., for allowing these birds to live here.

The Jardine Parrot is a beautifully-colored species with a curious and playful personality. Native to west, central and east Africa, the Jardine can learn to talk quite well, but is a quiet species as are all Poicephalus. Some subspecies develop beautiful orange coloration on the forehead, thighs and wing epaulets with maturity.  The orange coloration is minimal in this subspecies (Poicephalus gulielmi massaicus).   In addition to having less orange, they are larger, have a more upright stance and a smaller beak than the other two subspecies.

Meet Mimi, a recent addition to our breeding collection. Mimi is a Red-Vented Cockatoo from the Philippines. She is over 30 years of age and has been laying eggs without a male around for the past 6 or 7 years. She is a real sweetheart. She talks and will go to anyone. She loves to sit on your shoulder and watch the Disney Channel!   She is now paired with Tad, another older, imported Red-Vented Cockatoo.  We are keeping our fingers crossed for eggs and babies this season.

The Philippine Red-Vented Cockatoo has become extremely rare in its native regions, due to habitat destruction and disease. Red-Vented Cockatoos are too rare to be kept as pets at this time. All birds of this species should be placed in breeding programs. Unfortunately, this is a species in which mate aggression is a very serious problem.

This is José, a male Magna Double Yellow-Headed Amazon Parrot. Amazon Parrots are very popular because of their talking abilities.

Wild-caught male Hawkhead Parrot from Birds of Paradise Aviaries

This unusual looking parrot is a Hawkhead. This is the male of our wild-caught pair. This pair was a part of the last legal shipment of Hawkhead Parrots into the United States. We have had this pair since 1992. Hawkheads are difficult to breed and often take years to start.
